OUR STORY
We have been raising some form of 4 legged animals (sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas) and 2 legged animals (chickens and geese) since moving to our current acreage near Weaverville in 2001. We needed something to eat the grass in the pastures and something that would teach my (then) 4 year old about caring for the land and animals.
My husband helped name our farming adventure Hobbyknob Farm. “Hobby” is the most important word. I do this as my passion and not for a living. Although, I do what I can to get our animals to at least “earn their keep".
With the help of outside employment, I was able to support our growing flock during the first 15 years. We settled on Jacob sheep (heritage breed) as our primary type of livestock along with long wool breeds of Border Leicester and Blue Faced Leicester.
Today, Hobbyknob is home to 2 llamas, 9 goats, and a lot of sheep, and laying hens, 3 geese and a farm guardian dog. We sell breeding livestock, raw fleece, hand spun and mill spun yarns, roving for hand spinners, hand-dyed rovings and locks.
In 2016 we also relocated and restored a historic log cabin that dates back to the 1800s, transforming it into a vacation rental so that others could enjoy a change of pace on our farmstead amidst the beautiful mountains.
